June 2006 the third album of the Ad Colen Quartet was released. Entitled “Bitter but Sweet” the CD features contemporary jazz originals, written mainly by the bandleader Ad Colen, but also includes compositions by Rob van Bavel, Geert Roelofs and Tet Koffeman.
Bitter but Sweet is released by Sweet Briar Music and Distributed in Holland and Belgium by Baltic Records.
The quartet plays a repertoire that has developed a natural balance between modern jazz and other contemporary music streams. Characteristic is the relaxed yet tight style and the warm, full bodied sound of the leader
The two previous CD’s, ’Naked’ (1997) and ‘Eyes wide open’ (2000), are filled with dynamic solos, volcanic grooves coupled with intriguing compositions. The contribution of each of the musicians is clearly present.
Jeroen Valk – the renowned Dutch critic- wrote of Colen: “He has a sound you want to kiss: a justifiable compromise between the full-bodied sound of the heavy tenors and the sophisticated and fragile sound of Lester Young.”
Ad Colen is accompanied by no less a person than Rob van Bavel on piano, the young and talented drummer Jasper van Hulten and Erik Robaard on double bass.
Appearances at the North Sea Jazz festival, concerts throughout Holland and the international scene have ensured that the quartet has become a part of the Jazz world. March 2006 the group had a very succesfull tour in Indonesia.
They played at the JavaJazzFestival in Jakarta, and several other Indonesian cities. It was their second tour in Indonesia.
