apa ini - Indonesian for “What is this?” - have been playing together since late 2002. Underpinned by West African rhythms, the original compositions and improvisations are characterized by intense musical interaction and a dash of humor. Sinuous melodies, subtle sound explorations, raw improvisations and incredible rhythmic diversity and drive produces music that is both emotionally-charged and intellectually satisfying: reflective, swinging, wild, beautiful. Delius, known for his encyclopedic jazz knowledge and full-blown sound, joins up with the inventive young Englishman, Hilary Jeffery, who has a background in jazz, electronics and new music. Gueye, from Senegal, and de Joode are empathetic sparring partners, giving the music an exciting momentum. Everyone is an equal partner in the mix - solos, duos, trios and full-on group improvisations pass the revue.
