Cousin X is a group of original musicians, highly individual and with a strong reputation. Since the group was brought together by bassist Floris Vermeulen (Feb. 1992) they've combined Jazz, Hip Hop and World Music, resulting in an explosive combination of musical styles. The music of Cousin X contains modal as well as more advanced harmonic structures in which the musicians feel free to improvise. The music of Cousin X' is inspired by modern movements, introduced by artists as Steve Coleman and Frank Zappa, as well as the music of more contemporary artists like Charles Mingus and Jimi Hendrix.
Cousin X' first cd entiteled Pay the Price (CX9701)was released December 1997 and presented in the Amsterdam Rock Arena Paradiso. The concert was broadcast by the Dutch radio. The cd contains a variety of music, from Jazz to Hip Hop, from Hard-Bop to Rock.
October 1998 X-Cuse Me! has been released (VJ9920622). This release was the beginning of a tour through The Netherlands: "Young VIP's on Tour". This tour led the band a/o the BIM Huis in Amsterdam and the SJU-Jazzstage in Utrecht.
In the summer of 1995 Cousin X was invited to play in Morocco at the three weeks lasting 16th edition of the International World Music Festival of Saidia. Moreover, Cousin X was invited in 1999 to play at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag.
