FRA FRA SOUND
If you want to label this music, call it Afro-Caribbean Jazz. But actually this music should not be pigeonholed: it is characterized by a catchy, swinging, somewhat unusual and always perfectly balanced mix of different styles.
The Suriname word fra fra means balance, or more specifically a contrary combination of different elements. Fra Fra sound combines American jazz, Surinamese kaseko and African rhythms into a unique and surprisingly flexible own brand of music. Since Fra Fra Sound was founded in 1980 musicians from Suriname, the Antilles, the Netherlands and Africa have played in the band. Fra Fra Sound has become one of the leading Caribbean jazz bands internationally. Fra Fra Sound’s music is one of the best kept secrets of contemporary world music from the Netherlands. The secret is coming out because more and more they are invited to play at world renowned festivals such as the
North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, Holland, the Arts Alive Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ocho Rios Festival in Jamaica and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and the demand for cd’s is increasing worldwide as well.
The group tours extensively worldwide. Successful concerts were given in:
Cuba, Suriname, Aruba and Curaçao, Jamaica, Trinidad, Morocco, Tunesia, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, South-Africa; and in Europe Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Malta, La Reunion and Mayotte.
