The Gene Carl Band has been around since 1997. The music combines jazzy and rock harmonies with structures from the classical modern music i.e. Andriessen, Stravinsky, Stockhausen. His long association with the sound poetry movement in the '70s and '80s, as well as co-editor of the magazine E, is shown by his taste in non-narritive texts. All pieces are written with sections to be improvsied. In his cantata "Pink Chinese Restaurants" (poem by Marshall Reese) there are 4 songs with 5 differents improvisations. The group has one CD out: Below Paradise. Gene Carl is most well known for Gray Matter, on 3 CD's, and with the groups Hoketus, Byte (tour with Fred Frith) and Canto Ostinato. The Band premiered in BIM June 2007 in its new format: Ken Gould, singer, Bo Koek, percussion/synth, Wiek Hijmans, electric guitar, Jeffrey Bruinsma, violin and Gene Carl, piano/synth which produces a transparent chamber music style as well as a full, tight "wall of sound". The cantata "Pink Chinese Restaurants" and "Slierten" are their best known works.
