Volkskrant 2 Febr.: "Kamil Erdem with integral teamwork and virtuos solos. An impressive performance ... ."

As one proceeds from Balkans to the Middle-East, so many borders are crossed, the music however, though some hundred, even thousand miles are covered, changes smoothly and still has many things in common. It might be the Ottoman roots, the Byzantine roots, or both, or none! No matter what the reason is; the musics of the Balkans, Anatolia and the Middle East are different, but strongly linked.

“Crossing over” is no longer an experiment for Kamil Erdem. There has always been a meeting of cultures in his music since early 90’s, not only in the sound of the groups he led so far, but even in his solo bass works. The melodies are inspired from the oriental scales, the rhythmic structure is based on the Balkan and Anatolian styles and the musical expression waves between the traditional and contemporary.

Kamil’s new Quartet is proceeding in the same direction. Featuring renown instrumentalists from Istanbul and Holland, this Quartet establishes a balance between the composed parts and improvisations.

The Debut CD will be released in April.
