For approximately two years Louk Boudesteijn (trombone) and his “lifelong musical companion” Rob van de Wouw (trumpet) have led the Louk Boudesteijn/ Rob van de Wouw-Quintet (B&W-Quintet). The quintet has grown a great deal during these two years.
This growth did not go unnoticed however, for in 2002 the B&W-Quintet was asked to play at the North Sea Jazz festival. They also gave a very successful concert at the renowned Carnegie Hall (New York).
The distinctively unique sound of the quintet is produced by the trombone-trumpet frontline accompanied by the sound of a Hammond organ and a super swinging rhythm section. The band’s main influences come from the hard bop-tradition and the Woody Shaw groups with Steve Turre and Larry Young.
But the B&W- Quintet mainly plays its own compositions, which will be out on compact disc in the course of 2003.
November 2002 the B&W-Quintet was invited to take part in the Carnegie Hall Workshop for Jazz ensembles. There was a final selection of six groups worldwide, the B&W-Quintet being the only European representative. Carnegie Hall organizes this “professional training workshop” annually for talented jazz musicians up to the age of 30. Kenny Baron, Steve Turre, David Liebman, Rufus Reid, Cecil Bridgewater and Justin DiCioccio lead this workshop.
The B&W-Quintet was received very positively. “You obviously know this language very well,” said Dave Liebman after the group played their first pieces. At the closing concert, in the Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the New York audience was ecstatic and the quintet received a standing ovation. They were also very enthusiastic about the band’s own compositions. “Man…these cats are swinging hard!!” according to Steve Turre.
