The Marnix Busstra Trio can be considered a continuation of the Marnix Busstra 4-tet, with the same guys – Pieter Bast and Eric van der Westen – on drums and bass, respectively.
Marnix’ cooperation with Mike Mainieri started when he featured Mike as a guest soloist on the Second Vision album It’s All In The Mind, recorded in the vibist’s residence, New York. The CD also included a performance of singer Dianne Reeves.
Mike loved Marnix’s music so much, that he suggested to continue the cooperation. A number of successful tours followed, Marnix and Mike becoming close friends. The Marnix Busstra Trio + Mike Mainieri is their next logical chapter.
Having toured with a larger, electrical line-up at first, Marnix and Mike wanted to do a project in a more intimate, acoustic setting in which Mike’s vibraphone would be fully integrated. The timbre of his instrument turned out to match Marnix’s guitars perfectly.
Marnix had written a number of previously unreleased tunes that seemed great for this type of group, and he composed another couple of songs specifically for the project. Mike wanted to contribute as a composer too, supplying his intriguing twelve-tone piece All In A Row.
A few warm and very inspired days in the summer of 2006 proved ample time to record this band’s first album, 12 Pieces.
The 12 Pieces Album will be released in November 2008.
