In 2003 Michiel Scheen invited three prominent Dutch musicians: Ab Baars (reeds), Ernst Glerum (bass) and Han Bennink (drums), to join him in a Quartet. After a few years of musical in-activity, Scheen is back with his highly individual and recognizable style. With this Quartet, he strives to combine his very personal interpretation of jazz with the playful and adventurous nature of improvised music.
In an inimitable mix of throbbing swing, survey-ing impro, halal chords and sincere lyricism, the MSQ continues its restless quest for new possibilities of ensemble-playing. In these disturbing times, this quartet also is submitted to unknown musical processes, however: with unbridled devotion, the group plunges in situations where direction and grip are well remembered, but cannot function as firm values and fundamentals anymore. Balancing on the cliffs of existence, the MSQ manages other essentials, such as shaky dance rhythms, sharp razored lumps of chopped harmony, spaghettiplates, sucked-in melodies, stadsklanken, caressing desire, flexible manifesto's, de-asshole-ing, interim-scores, secret transfusions, smelly cones, local un-hairiness, or snoring concepts.
Are you still there? But that's allright, isn't it?
