Sunday Soul Ensemble came into existence towards the end of the year 2000 in Nijmegen, a city in the east part of the Netherlands.
A number of musicians were asked to add a live element to a weekly soul lounge in cafe Merleyn (on Sunday…hence the not so far-fetched band name).
Some of the band members knew eachother, others had never met before the first rehearsal. Most of them saw it as a fun project for the time being...
The band started to appear monthly and the band members started to enjoy playing together more and more. Songs were written, the repertoire got more width and after a few well-received performances the guys in the band became aware that it might be a waste not to take this 'project' to a higher level.
In the mean time the band had started developing a distinct style in which a blend of jazz, funk, and soul (combined with modern grooves taken from, for example, hip hop and drum&bass) attempts to bring 'old' and 'new' dance music together.
Since the summer of 2001, Sunday Soul Ensemble has been playing all over the Netherlands, with venues ranging from small jazz bars (Casablanca, Amsterdam) to dance-oriented club events (De Vloer, Utrecht).
